How To Create Great Content for Hair Stylists & Salon Owners

Over the past year, I have worked with dozens of Hair Stylists and Beauty Brands,  and I’ve noticed that majority of the ones I have met did not even know where to start when it came down to documenting their craft. They are all very talented when it comes down to hair styling & all the other stuff, but it’s disheartening to see that they are intimidated to show off their work on Social Media. Not because they don’t want to, but because usually, they do not know how too.

By now I’m sure you’ve seen the power of Social Media and how it can help drive customers to your business. It also opens up opportunities for you to either leverage online education or perhaps create a product line that your audience would benefit from.

So let’s break this down to a few sections based on what you need to do to create compelling content on Social Media.

1 – Type of Content

2 – The Quality

3 – How To Create the Final Product (Content Piece)

Content is King

Some of the best things you could show off would be your best Before & After photos, hair color transformations, hair styling videos, and/or Hair Tutorials.

So you may be thinking, ‘That’s it?’ Well, yes. But you need to know how and what you can actually document it in order for your work to stand out.  I will share with you some examples below that work really well. It all comes down to the angle & lighting, the process, and the actual product. Always keep this question in mind: “Does this give a ‘WOW effect’?”

Before & After Transformation Photos

Take a look at my example below. You can use it as a reference on what your content should look like in terms of quality and production.

Top Tip: Use Pic Stich to connect the pictures. You can download this in the iOS Apple Store or GooglePlay Store.

Showcase a Hairstyle

This is a quick piece of content you could easily upload to your account. You could maybe ask a client if you could to take a quick picture of them after a hair treatment to post on your Instagram account. You can @mention them on the post itself.

Having a catchy caption is also key, but you don’t need to make it very detailed or complicated. Make sure you have a CALL TO ACTION. A ‘call to action’ lets you suggest to your followers on what they can do to further share your piece of content. Some examples of these are: “Tag your friends!” “Comment bellow!” “Share this!” And never forget to make use of relevant #hashtags.

VIDEO is one of the most important pieces of content you could create.

Your key objective is to record the best transformations or hair styles from start to finish in a span of 15-40 seconds MAX! Your goal should not be to hit the 60 second maximum mark on Instagram.  We want short videos!  However, you don’t have to worry about that during filming, you can edit during post production. It’s just easier to have that in mind so you don’t have to do much editing.

Let’s take an example done by Salon Owner & Stylist Mounir.

Don’t be scared. If you’re on a tight budget, you don’t need high quality or expensive camera equipment for this. All you need is your Smartphone. Set your Smartphone to take the before shot. You can use a small tripod and a smart phone clip to stabilize it.

I highly recommend you use something like GorrilaPod since it’s one of the most stable and versatile tripods I’ve ever used.

Now let’s see how it’s all put together!

Hair Tutorial Videos

Aside from your awesome services, this is another piece of fun content you want to show your audience. You basically have to show the process of how to do a particular hairstyle. It could be anything from one of your signature styles to fun braids. This could be and educational piece for your audiences too.

Let’s take a look at this quick braid tutorial by @Hair_byChrissy

As you can see, you don’t need to be as detailed or meticulous. If you just want to show how you do the hair style it could just be as quick simple as this. You could use the same techniques and equipment you’ve done for the Before & After transformation vid.

The Importance of Thumbnails

The first thing someone sees when they scroll past your video content are the thumbnails. They should be nice and attractive enough for someone to have a reason to click and watch your video.

Once you’re finished filming your video content, try to scrub through and see which scenes are the most eye catching and pleasant to look at. Pause it and take a screen shot. For Instagram, after you’ve uploaded your video make sure to choose your thumbnail first before you post it.

And there you have it! There’s no reason for you to hesitate. Remember that all of this is a good way to promote you and your salon. If you show the community or the world your talents and what you and your salon can do, the more it will attract customers to your business.
